Deepwater Wind has big plans for the US offshore wind industry

Deepwater Wind, so far the only offshore wind developer in the US, continues to have big plans. In addition to the planning of two further offshore farms for the year 2022, the company now presented a world-new concept: an offshore wind farm paired with an energy storage system.

There are already some wind farms in Europe that are combined with energy storage systems, but this technology is still in the early stages. To date, it has only been used for onshore wind farms, such as a wind farm in Wales which is run by Vattenfall.

Meanwhile, the Americans are planning an offshore wind farm in the waters off the coast of Massachusetts. “Revolution Wind will be the largest combined offshore wind and energy storage project in the world,” said Deepwater Wind Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Grybowski. “People may be surprised by just how affordable and reliable this clean energy combo will be. Offshore wind is mainstream and it is coming to the U.S. in a big way.”"

Revolution Wind Farm is expected to have a capacity of 144 MW and will be combined with a 40 megawatt-hour storage system developed by Tesla. In the run-up, Deepwater Wind also submitted plans for a larger and smaller version of the wind farm – with a capacity of 288 and 96 MW.

“Revolution Wind is flexible and scalable. That’s a serious advantage of offshore wind – we can build to the exact size utilities need,” Grybowski said. “We can build a larger project if other New England states want to participate now or we can start smaller to fit into the region’s near-term energy gaps. And our pricing at any size will be very competitive with the alternatives.”

Deepwater Wind will build Revolution Wind in the company’s federal lease site off the coast of Massachusetts. If the project gets a final green light, construction will start in 2022.
