Wind Industry Profile of

Romania: Nexans to increase wind power potential in Romania

Nexans is to supply 140km of high temperature conductor cables to carry renewable energy from EnergoBit’s new Babadag III Wind Farm

EnergoBit S.A.’s 30MW Babadag III Wind Farm in Romania will transmit energy to the grid using 140km of Nexans’ high temperature conductor cables and accessories.

The existing Babadag-Tulcea Vest 110 kV power line does not have enough capacity to carry power from EnergoBit S.A.’s new wind farm. Nexans’ high temperature ACSS/TW BRANT conductors will double the line rating without adding mechanical loads. Upgrading the conductor along the 44km OHL route allows the wind farm to operate with existing infrastructure, minimising cost and maximising efficiency.

With a capacity of 194MVA, the new power line is able to carry 63% more current than the existing system when operating at the same temperature. The ACSS conductors also allow for a 16% reduction in joule losses when operating at the same current as the existing ACSR system.

Speaking of the delivery, Stefan GADOLA, CEO at EnergoBit S.A said, “The reason why we chose to work with Nexans was because of its experience in delivering service components for the Wind and renewables sector, alongside its track record of reliability, safety and quality.”

“With a 10 year long relationship between us, Nexans is excited to be working on another project with Energobit S.A, not only to service the needs of the Babadag III Wind Farm, but also to contribute to increased energy security within Romania,” added Cyprien Federspiel, VP Sales & Marketing Land High Voltage at Nexans.

The Babadag III Wind Farm is in Dobrogea, southeast Romania. The conductors will be manufactured at Nexans’ Benelux plant in Elouge, Belgium.
