EWEA hosts first Tweetchat on how to create an Energy Union

The debate was entitled "Five Priorities for a European Energy Union" and centered around five key topics including stable frameworks, energy security, the Internal Energy Market, manufacturing growth and combating climate change

On Friday 23 January, the European Wind Energy Association hosted its first social media debate with MEPs, academics, industry representatives and influential bloggers. The debate was entitled "Five Priorities for a European Energy Union" and centered around five key topics including stable frameworks, energy security, the Internal Energy Market, manufacturing growth and combating climate change.

EWEA decided to host the Tweetchat after the publication of its Energy Union paper in December. It is available in six languages and you can download it by clicking here. Now on with the debate...

1) The first question centered on the need for guaranteeing regulatory frameworks. The Energy Union must be a vehicle for stabilising national energy policies giving financiers visibility to make informed decisions on investments.

The debate engaged all stakeholders including EWEA's Vice Chairman Jose Lopez-Tafall, who said the European Commission must take up the reins.

This above was just a short introduction to the twitters on the first question. Check out what they had to say on the remaining questions: click here

The remaining Questions were:

2) Energy security is identified as the second priority for the Energy Union. Following the events in Ukraine in 2014, the EU has been looking at ways to reduce its energy dependency. The Energy Union should replace exorbitant energy imports with zero-carbon indigenous resources.

3) Completion of the Internal Energy Market is the third priority. The Energy Union should establish a well-functioning European energy market to facilitate trade, enable fair competition and drive down costs for consumers and taxpayers.

4) Priority four is an Energy Union to manufacture growth in Europe. The Energy Union should bolster leading European technologies in the renewable energy industry through proactive industrial, innovation and trade policies.

5) Last but not least, priority five: combating climate change. The Energy Union should promote a forward-looking climate policy as a catalyst for economic development.
