RES Canada Announces Development of Quebec Wind Project

Located approximately 50 kilometers east of Québec City, the project will consist of 46 – 3.2 MW Siemens turbines

Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc. (RES Canada), a leader in the development and construction of wind, solar, transmission, and energy storage projects in Canada, is pleased to announce it has been selected to provide 147.2 megawatts (MW) of wind power to Hydro-Québec from the Mont Sainte-Marguerite project.  The award was one of three projects selected in the 450 MW Hydro-Québec tender.

Located approximately 50 kilometers east of Québec City, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region, and within the municipalities of Saint-Sylvestre, Saint-Séverin and Sacré-Coeur-de-Jésus, the project will consist of 46 – 3.2 MW Siemens turbines. The project will employ up to 200 skilled workers on site at the peak of construction activity and create 10-12 permanent jobs once operational. Mont Sainte-Marguerite is expected to be fully operational by December 2017 and will provide power to Hydro-Québec Distribution under a 25-year contract.

RES Canada is the developer of Mont Sainte-Marguerite wind project and is partnered with Pattern Renewable Holdings Canada ULC as well as the municipalities of Saint-Sylvestre and Saint-Séverin.

“We’re thrilled that our project was selected by Hydro-Québec, not least because it will deliver real benefits and jobs to our partner municipalities”,” said Peter Clibbon, Senior Vice President of Development for RES Canada. “Our project will also support the turbine manufacturers which employ thousands across the province”.

Mr. Clibbon remarked on the price obtained by the Hydro-Québec tender, which was the lowest ever obtained in Quebec. “At an average price of 6.3 cents per kWh, wind energy is now some of the cheapest power in the province, even taking into account network upgrade costs that bring the total average price to 7.6 cents/kWh.”

“We are very excited that the Mont Sainte-Marguerite wind project was selected by Hydro-Québec and to have two terrific partners in RES and the municipalities of Saint-Sylvestre, Saint-Séverin and Sacré-Coeur-de-Jésus.” said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Development. “This major project will bring jobs to the Chaudière-Appalaches region, economic benefits to the community and a new source of clean energy for Quebec.  We thank Hydro-Québec for this opportunity and applaud its commitment to develop clean and renewable energy sources in the province.”

Local communities are active participants of the development team and were co-sponsors and supporters of the Mont Sainte Marguerite project.

RES Canada has a wind energy construction portfolio of more than 700 MW in Canada, which includes the 270 MW South Kent Wind project, Ontario’s largest wind farm.  The company recently completed construction of the Montana-Alberta Tie-Line (MATL) transmission line, a 345 km high-voltage power line between Lethbridge, Alberta and Great Falls, Montana.
