Turkey fails to make use of wind power
A report produced by the European Wind Energy Association and environmental lobby group Greenpeace has said that the world could meet 12 percent of its energy requirements through wind generated power in 2020. The report said that 19 million people in Europe utilised wind generated power and that Turkey was at the bottom of the list. Germany leads the way for wind generated power production with 16,629 megawatts, Spain comes second with 8,263 megawatts whereas Turkey’s production stand at only 20 megawatts.
The head of the Greenpeace Mediterranean Energy Campaign, Özgür Gürbüz, said that the parliament’s failure to pass legislation supporting the development of alternative energy was an obstacle for the sector. “We have been waiting for years for this law. If this law is not passed Turkey will be missing a very important train,” he said. The groups also stressed the environmental value and potential for creating employment opportunities by switching to wind generated power.
